Clinical Guidance for Optimal Results

Laser Hair Removal: Preparation, Procedure & Post-Care Protocols.

At Laser Me, we treat your laser hair removal journey as a clinical protocol. To ensure the safety and efficacy of your treatment, we require adherence to specific guidelines before and after your sessions. These protocols, vetted under medical direction, are designed to protect your skin barrier, optimize follicle destruction, and ensure you achieve the most consistent results possible.

Laser Hair Removal

Phase I: Preparation — The 4-Week Protocol.

Proper preparation is the first step in successful follicular destruction. Please adhere to the following 4 weeks prior to your session:

Cease Plucking, Waxing, and Threading

We require the hair follicle to be intact for the laser to effectively target the root. Shaving is the only permitted method of hair removal during your protocol.

Strict Sun Avoidance

Sun-tanned or sunburned skin significantly increases the risk of adverse reactions. Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment. If you have a tan, we may need to reschedule your session to ensure safety.

Consult on Medications

Certain photosensitizing medications (including some antibiotics and retinoids) can react with laser energy. Please provide a complete list of your current medications and supplements during your consultation so we can clear your protocol safely.

Phase II: The Day of Treatment.

Shave the Treatment Area

Please arrive with the area cleanly shaved 24 hours prior to your appointment. This allows the laser energy to bypass the hair shaft and target the follicle directly, minimizing surface irritation.

Clean Skin

Ensure the treatment area is free of lotions, perfumes, deodorants, or makeup. These substances can interfere with laser light absorption and increase the risk of surface skin irritation.

Phase III: Clinical Aftercare & Recovery.

Post-procedure, your skin will require a brief recovery period. Our aftercare protocol is designed to mitigate inflammation and protect your skin:

Strict Sun Avoidance

For 14 to 21 days post-treatment, direct sun exposure must be strictly avoided. Laser-treated skin is highly photosensitive; UV exposure during this recovery window significantly increases the risk of hyperpigmentation or other adverse reactions.

Minimize Thermal Exposure

For 48 hours post-treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense physical exertion. Keep the area cool to ensure the treated follicles remain undisturbed.

Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

If you must be outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum, mineral-based SPF 30+ daily. We recommend consistent protection throughout the full 21-day window to ensure your skin barrier heals safely and evenly.

Soothing Care

If you experience mild redness or sensitivity, apply a cold compress or a physician-recommended soothing balm. Do not use exfoliating scrubs, acids, or harsh chemicals on the treated area for at least 5 to 7 days.

The Shedding Phase

You will notice hair appearing to “grow” in the days following treatment. This is not new growth; it is the treated hair being expelled by the follicle. This shedding process typically completes within 10 to 14 days.

Before and After Your Session

Prep and aftercare, answered.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Arrive with the area shaved, and stay out of the sun and off self-tanner beforehand.

Shaving matters because the laser needs to reach the follicle under the skin. Tell us about recent tanning, self-tanner, medications, or changes to your skin. Avoid waxing and plucking during your series — those remove the very thing we’re treating. We’ll give you instructions specific to your treatment area.

What should I expect after treatment?

Most patients go straight back to their day. Mild redness and a warm, slightly raised look around the follicles is normal and usually settles within hours.

Over the following one to three weeks, treated hairs work their way out of the skin. It can look like regrowth — it isn’t. That’s shedding, and it means the treatment did its job.

Keep treated skin out of the sun and wear sunscreen.

Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shave as much as you like between appointments. What to avoid is waxing, plucking, threading and epilating, because those remove the follicle the laser needs to find at your next visit.
Can I work out or shower after treatment?

Shower whenever you like. Give workouts, saunas and hot tubs about 24 hours.

Treated skin is briefly warm and sensitive, and heat, sweat and friction are what turn that into irritation. Cool water is fine. For underarms, give deodorant a day as well.

Can I be treated if I’m tanned, or tan afterward?

No to both, and this is the guideline patients most often overlook.

A tan — from sun or from a bed — adds pigment to your skin, and pigment is what this laser targets. Treating tanned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes. Self-tanner affects how the laser reads your skin even though it isn’t a real tan.

Afterward, treated skin is more vulnerable than usual, so keep it covered and wear sunscreen. If you have a trip booked, tell us and we’ll plan the series around it.

Individual results vary. Treatment outcomes depend on your skin type, hair color and texture, the area treated, and completion of the recommended series. Laser hair removal achieves permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of results or a substitute for a clinical consultation.
