Brazilian Laser HairRemoval

The most personal appointment we do. Here is exactly what happens in the room, and exactly how much it stings.

The Short Answer

Everything, front to back.

A Brazilian is comprehensive. It treats the whole pubic region — the mound, the labia, the perineum and the perianal area — and you decide what, if anything, stays. Some clients leave a vertical strip. Some leave a triangle. Many leave nothing at all. There is no default and no house style; you tell your provider at the consultation and we mark the boundary before a single pulse fires. That decision deserves genuine thought, because the whole point of this treatment is that the reduction lasts. A strip you loved at twenty-eight is harder to grow back at thirty-four than you might assume.

If what you actually want is only the hair that shows outside a swimsuit, that is a bikini, not a Brazilian, and it is a smaller, quicker, easier appointment. Plenty of clients start there and expand later. Nobody has ever been talked into a larger area at Laser Me and nobody ever will be.

Here is the good news, biologically speaking. The hair in this region is the coarsest terminal hair the human body grows: thick shaft, deep follicle, saturated with the melanin that the GentleMax Pro is built to find. It is, in pure physics terms, an excellent target. Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and this area frequently sits toward the upper end of that range — not because the laser struggles to reach the hair, but because this is hormonally driven territory with a deep bench of dormant follicles waiting their turn. Results vary with hair colour, skin tone and hormones.

Let’s Just Say It

Yes, it’s awkward.

Almost every first-time Brazilian client arrives having rehearsed a joke about it in the car. We know. Twenty-plus years and over 100,000 treatments in, here is what we would like you to know before you walk in: your provider has done this thousands of times, has seen every possible variation of human body, and has precisely zero opinion about yours. The appointment is not a social occasion. It is a clinical procedure performed by a woman who does it all day, every day.

Practically, it looks like this. You undress from the waist down in private and use the draping provided. Your provider comes in, confirms the boundary you agreed to, hands you protective eyewear, and works in sections — treating one area, repositioning the drape, moving on. You will be asked to move your legs into a couple of positions so the perineal and perianal regions can be reached, and yes, that is exactly as functional and unceremonious as it sounds. There is talking, most of it about your weekend. Then it is over and you get dressed.

Laser Me is a mother-and-daughter practice, faith-based, and the culture in the room is the whole reason people send their friends here. You are allowed to ask for a pause. You are allowed to change your mind about the boundary halfway through. You are allowed to say “that one hurt.” None of it is a problem.

The Pain Question

The most sensitive area we treat.

We are not going to soften this. Of every area on the body, a Brazilian is the one that stings most, and there is a reason that has nothing to do with technique. Sensation scales with two things: how coarse the hair is, and how thin the skin over the nerves is. This region maxes out both variables simultaneously. Coarse hair absorbs more energy and therefore converts more of it into heat, and there is very little between that heat and a dense supply of nerve endings.

Three things make it genuinely survivable, and they are not spin. First, cryogen: the GentleMax Pro fires a burst of coolant onto the skin milliseconds before each pulse, chilling the surface while the energy travels below it. Second, speed — the area is small and the treatment is measured in minutes, not the half-hour a pair of legs takes. Third, and this is the one clients are always surprised by: it gets dramatically easier. Session one is the hardest appointment of the series because it contains the most hair. By session four there is far less hair left to absorb energy, and most people who braced for the first one stop bracing entirely.

Before You Come In

Four things that matter.

Shave Clean

The night before or the morning of, shaved as close as you can manage. Stubble left long absorbs energy at the surface instead of delivering it down the shaft, which is uncomfortable and less effective.

Stop Waxing

Four weeks, no exceptions. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating creams pull the hair out of the follicle, and the follicle is what we are aiming at. No hair in it means no target and a wasted session.

Time It If You Can

Many clients find the middle of their cycle noticeably more comfortable than the week before their period. If you are menstruating, a tampon is fine and we treat as normal — but reschedule freely if you would rather not.

No Fresh Tan

This area is rarely sun-exposed, which is a real advantage. But self-tanner migrates and spray tans wander. Come in with the skin the colour it actually is, and skip the lotion and oil that day.

Afterwards: warmth for a few hours, likely some pink bumps around the follicles that settle within a day, and a firm no on hot tubs, saunas, steam and hard workouts for roughly 48 hours. Heat and friction on freshly treated skin in a fold is the one reliable way to irritate this area, and a spin class the same afternoon is asking for it. Wear cotton, wear it loose, and give the seams a day off.

Hormones & Ingrowns

Why this area behaves differently.

Pubic hair is androgen-driven, and that single fact explains most of what makes a Brazilian unlike treating a shin. Androgens tell follicles here to produce terminal hair, and the supply of follicles capable of switching on is larger than what is currently active. A laser can only affect a follicle that is currently growing a pigmented hair on the day you are on the table — a dormant follicle is invisible to it. So when your hormones shift, follicles that were never treated because they were never awake can start producing. Pregnancy does it. PCOS does it. Perimenopause does it. Thyroid changes and certain medications do it.

This is precisely why the FDA-cleared term for these devices is permanent hair reduction rather than removal, and why we say it out loud on a page that would sell better without it. Reduction means a lasting decrease in the number of hairs that regrow after a completed series, and what does come back is typically finer, lighter and slower. It does not mean the region is finished forever. In practice, most Brazilian clients keep an occasional maintenance session — more often than they would for their legs, precisely because of the hormonal driver. That is not the treatment failing. That is the treatment doing exactly what it does while your endocrine system does exactly what it does.

The flip side is the reason many clients come in the first place: ingrown hairs and chronic folliculitis. This area is coarse-haired, curly-haired, occluded, warm and constantly under friction — every condition on the list that makes a hair grow back into the skin rather than out of it. Years of waxing makes it worse, because ripping hair from a follicle repeatedly is not gentle on the follicle. Fewer coarse hairs means fewer hairs available to turn around, and you stop taking a blade to the area twice a week. Most clients report the bumps calm down before the hair count visibly drops. We will not promise you an outcome, and anything persistent or painful in this region should be seen by a provider before we treat it — that is a medical question, not a cosmetic one.

The Honest Limits

When we’ll tell you no.

The treatment needs pigment. Blonde, red, grey and white hair carry little or none of the pigment these wavelengths absorb — grey and white have essentially none left, and that absence is what makes them grey and white. There is no setting that fixes it; more energy on a target that will not absorb it simply endangers the skin around it. If your hair here is genuinely light, we will tell you at the consultation and we will not sell you a package. We would rather lose the sale than take your money for a series unlikely to help you.

There are also “not right now” answers rather than no: pregnancy, certain photosensitising medications, an active skin condition in the treatment area. None of those are permanent disqualifications and all of them surface in about ten minutes of an honest consultation. Ours is complimentary, and our full walkthrough lives on am I a candidate.

Since 2000 — more than 10,000 clients and over 100,000 treatments performed — the pattern has been consistent: the happiest clients are the ones who understood the mechanism before they started. They knew why the sessions were spaced the way they were, they knew what “reduction” meant, and nobody sold them a miracle, so nothing had to disappoint them. Browse the rest of our treatment areas if you are weighing options, or read up on legs, which behave almost nothing like this one.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

It is the most sensitive area we treat, because coarse hair converts more light into heat and the skin here is thin over a dense supply of nerves. Most clients describe each pulse as a hot rubber-band snap. Cryogen cooling fires milliseconds before every pulse, the area is small so it is over in minutes, and it gets significantly easier by around session four because there is simply less hair left to absorb energy.
Yes. A tampon is fine and we treat as normal. That said, many clients find the week before their period the least comfortable time for anything in this region and prefer to book mid-cycle. It is a preference, not a rule, and you are welcome to reschedule for any reason without explaining yourself.
No. You choose the boundary and your provider marks it before treatment starts. Many clients leave a strip or a triangle. Think it through carefully, though: the point of the treatment is that the reduction lasts, so growing an area back later is not straightforward. You can always treat more next time; you cannot easily undo it.
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and the Brazilian often sits at the upper end. The hair here is androgen-driven, which means a large reserve of dormant follicles that the laser cannot see on any given day because they are not growing anything. As they cycle in, they get treated — which takes more passes than a small, less hormonally reactive area like the underarms.
The FDA-cleared language is permanent hair reduction, not removal, and we use it deliberately. Most clients finish a series with dramatically less hair, and what returns is typically finer and lighter. Because this region responds to hormones, pregnancy, PCOS, thyroid changes or a new medication can activate follicles that were dormant the whole time you were coming in. Many clients keep an occasional maintenance session for exactly that reason. Results vary with hair colour, skin tone and hormones.
